Practical Tests

More information about the practical test will be provided on your lessons, as well as the free training booklet you will recieve on your first lesson.

  • The practical test usually takes around 40 minutes
  • You can only apply for the practical test once you have passed the theory test (but you can have driving lessons as soon as you get your provisional licence)
  • Once you pass the theory test it is only valid for 2 years
  • You will not have to resit the theory test if you fail the practical test
  • Full details of the practical driving test and details about the show me/tell me element of the practical driving test can be found on the DSA website
  • Details of the current test fees can be found here
  • Once you have passed the practical test, you might like to take the short pass plus course, which often qualifies you for one year's no claims discount with car insurance companies
According to the DSA those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice. Learners who prepare this way, with a combination of plenty of professional training and plenty of practice, do better in the test.

It may be helpful to practice in another vehicle, but make sure that you are accompanied by someone who is at least 21 years of age (who has also held a full driving licence for at least 3 years), that you display 'L' plates on the car and that you have adequate insurance.
